The traditional Irish frame drum. It consists of a round wooden frame with a single, animal-skin head. It is played with a stick, which is called a tipper. It may have cross-pieces to make it easier to hold and play. The bodhrán was originally used for Irish festivals, such as the festival of St. Stephen's Day. Since the 1950s, there has been a revival of traditional Irish music, which has led to increasing use of the bodhrán.
