The waved edge of the bottom hihat prevents a congestion of air between the two hihat cymbals. When stepping on the pedal, the air can escape immediately resulting in a fat cutting "chick" sound. When played with a stick, soundwaved hihats respond very directly, sounding sharp and precise. Every Byzance cymbal is a piece of art and has its own unique sound characteristics which can never be duplicated.

Of all the bronze alloys used for cymbal making, B20 bronze has the highest contingent of tin which makes it very soft and flexible. Cymbals made from B20 bronze sound very dark and musical. They blend in perfectly with the music and have a smooth feel when hit. Of all the cymbal alloys, B20 is more complementary than other cymbal alloys to many styles of music and is generally considered the finest material for making cymbals.

Byzance cymbals are traditionally made using the single-cast procedure. This means that every cymbal is crafted from an individual cast blank.
