Snare drum rudiments consist of 40 basic rhythmic beats and sticking patterns standardized by The Percussive Arts Society (PAS). Rudiments are used by drummers to help them practice and hone their skills, and knowing all PAS approved rudiments is the key to drumming success at any level. The most common drumming rudiments are the roll, flam and paradiddle, and most of the others are some variation of these three that you can combine any number of ways to create music.
Originally developed the Swiss military in the 14th century, rudiments were later brought to America by the British military during the Revolutionary War.
